The most significant challenge during the tunnel construction was the high volume of water in the tunnel's overhead, causing substantial issues with water drainage, explosive operations, and tunneling. To mitigate this problem, most of the excavation was conducted from the tunnel's exit, where the water could be gravitationally drained, and construction at the tunnel entrance continued during the drier seasons.
Alishtar and Borujerd are cities in Lorestan Province. Currently, the connection between these two cities is through an existing secondary road. This route, which passes at an elevation of 2450 meters above sea level, is closed for approximately six months each year due to heavy snowfall. Consequently, traffic must take an alternative route via Kakarza, adding an extra 35 kilometers. To address this issue, the Alishtar-Borujerd tunnel, spanning 2 kilometers, was planned and executed following economic feasibility studies. In addition to the tunnel, a 24-kilometer route was defined, with 8 kilometers being newly constructed and the remainder upgrading the existing secondary road to a primary road. The road width is 11 meters, featuring two lanes for bidirectional traffic.
