General Description: The project for the Sanandaj-Mariwan-Bashmaq International Border route includes the following segments: Sheikh Bridge to the beginning of Teytour Pass (currently under construction in four phases). Teytour Pass to Toudar Intersection (under study for the four-phase route). Khoroseh Pass from Tudar Intersection to Shuyshah Intersection (currently under construction in four phases). Shuyshah Intersection to Garan Intersection (new Sanandaj-Mariwan road recently opened to traffic, featuring three-lane tunnels). Garan Intersection (construction started in 1399 [2020] and currently under construction). Garan to Mariwan (part of the four-phase route, with the entire route expected to be completed by the end of this year). Northern Bypass of Mariwan (comprising 32 kilometers, with final plans and specifications ready for tender). Due to the intersection of the new Sanandaj-Mariwan route with the Mariwan-Saqez road, rural roads, and the Garan River, constructing the non-grade-separated Garan intersection, including a 252-meter long bridge, a single-lane underpass (Dembele Bridge), and necessary diversion routes, seems essential. This project was awarded through a tender by the Roads Construction and Development Company to a reputable construction firm under the supervision of RahyabMelal Consulting Engineers, beginning in 2020 and currently having achieved over 60% physical progress. The importance of the Garan bridge and non-grade-separated intersection lies in providing access to the border city of Mariwan, the Marivan Free Zone, villages, and tourist areas of Marivan, including Zeriwar Lake, the city of Laklakha, Uraman Tourism Region, and others. It also serves the annual pilgrimage traffic to Karbala for the third consecutive year via this route. Given the convergence of the three cities of Mariwan, Saqez, and Sanandaj at the Garan bridge, and the high risk at this point leading to increased accidents, the construction of the Garan bridge for traffic from Sanandaj to Mariwan and from Mariwan to Saqez under the bridge was deemed necessary. The design of the Sanandaj-Mariwan route was envisioned as dual-carriageway, which has been incorporated into this project. Issues with the previous route included very tight horizontal curve radii and conflicts between vertical and horizontal curves, resulting in speed limitations, increased road accidents, and national resource wastage.
Benefits of the project upon completion include: Facilitation of pilgrimage traffic towards Karbala, international border at Bashmaq, and the Marivan Free Zone. Enhancement of road safety indices, conservation of national resources, and reduction of road accidents. Increased travel safety. Enhanced capacity in the field of non-military defense. Improved emergency response capabilities and road safety in various conditions and seasons.
