As part of the regional and urban development goals, the construction of an airport in Saqqez has been initiated. The Saqqez Airport runway measures 2,930 meters in length and 30 meters in width. The taxiway of the airport is 450 meters long and 25 meters wide. The apron has dimensions of 50 meters by 50 meters. The terminal building covers an area of over 2,300 square meters. The perimeter wall of the airport stretches 8,500 meters, enclosing a total area of 179 hectares. This airport is a key development in the country's transportation network and will serve the residents of the western cities, benefiting a population of over 1,000,000 people. With the airport becoming operational, the economic, social, educational, industrial, agricultural, tourism, and commercial development of Saqqez County, Kurdistan Province, and the western region of the country will see a significant boost. Saqqez Airport, with its proximity to the three border markets of Bashmaq in Marivan, Saif in Saqqez, and Sirwanband in Baneh, will play a crucial role in enhancing economic and trade exchanges. It will increase and improve the inclination towards domestic and foreign investments in the county, province, and the region.
Benefits of the Project: • Provision of Suitable Conditions for Rescue Operations in Emergencies and Natural Disasters: The airport will enable effective emergency response and delivery of services in critical situations. • Infrastructure Development for Regional Growth: It will facilitate regional development, improve living conditions, and promote business opportunities for the local population, aiding in the alleviation of poverty in the province. • Support for Agricultural, Mining, Industrial, and Service Units: The airport will ease the operations of various economic sectors in the region. • Tourism Development: It will create a foundation for attracting domestic and international tourists, boosting the tourism industry. • Addressing the Lack of Airports Between Urmia and Sanandaj: With a distance of 410 kilometers between these two cities, the airport will fill a significant gap in the region's transportation infrastructure. • Projected Passenger Handling: The airport is expected to handle 87,000 passengers by the year 1410 (2031). • Passenger and Cargo Transport: It will facilitate the transfer of passengers and cargo from the densely populated city of Saqqez (the second most populous city in Kurdistan Province) to the capital and other parts of the country. • Air Service to Nearby Cities: The airport will provide air services to cities near Saqqez, including Baneh (considering its proximity to the official Sirwanband border, 75 kilometers away), Marivan, Divandarreh, Sardasht, Bukan, Miandoab, Piranshahr, Mahabad, and Takab.
