The BabaHosein Bridge

The Khorramabad Southern Bypass Improvement Project forms part of the southwestern transportation corridor connecting to the capital, Tehran, and serves as a major route for transit traffic along this corridor. The bypass begins at a trumpet interchange near Khorramabad Airport, approximately 8 kilometres from the city centre, passing near the villages of Badraabad and Bahrami. It continues along the southeastern outskirts of Khorramabad, traversing the vicinity of the Dinarvand, Naseravand, and Baba Hossein villages, and terminates at a cloverleaf interchange near Kamalvand village.

At the intersections with seasonal rivers, two bridges were required—one with a span of 35 metres and another with a span of 140 metres. The Baba Hossein Bridge, with a total length of 144 metres, consists of seven 20-metre spans on the northbound carriageway. The superstructure is 12 metres wide and comprises precast reinforced concrete girders with a height of 1.2 metres, cast-in-place deck slabs, twin-column piers, and closed-type abutments at both ends.

Based on scour analysis and hydraulic studies, the bridge is supported on deep foundations, consisting of eight 12-metre piles beneath each intermediate pier and abutment. In total, the bridge includes 12 columns, two reinforced concrete abutment walls each 8.3 metres high, and 64 bored piles of 12 metres in length. The vertical clearance from the deck to the pile cap level is 9.5 metres. The wing walls of the abutments are constructed using random rubble masonry with cement-sand mortar.
